Female Facial Hair Removal

Female facial hair removal is a touchy subject for me. From hair eyebrows, mustache, some crazy neck hairs, and even some new dark squiggly hair on my cheeks, it feels like this is a constant battle. I've done waxing at salons and myself at home. Here's a facial hair removal review of one of the home wax products I used. Below is a general article I commissioned for this site (with my personal experiences and comments put in italics).

Facial hair on women, apart from the normal vellus, peach fuzzes and eyebrows, is typically a secondary female characteristic that is quite rare. However, there are cases where women develop noticeable hairiness (or hirsutism) on their faces, a characteristic that could occur at any age although very common after menopause. (I guess, I'm a freak, then. But this has been going on since high school, and though I'm getting old-ER, I have yet to undergo menapause.) Generally, such facial hair is considered embarrassing in many societies and women endeavor in female facial hair removal by tweezing (I've done this read about my tweezing facial hair adventure here), shaving (this is a bad idea, but I've done it too) or depilating (Done it read about face hair removal by cream) in an effort to end the feared stigma associated with it.

I've also tried female facial hair removal via electrolysis, and face hair removal by plucking, self-sugaring, and waxing at home.)

So what are the best ways of female facial hair removal? Here we discuss the most recommended ones.

Threading

Threading is one of the oldest hair removal techniques whose origins are traceable to Egypt. It is a very popular trend among women due to its effectiveness. It works by twisting a cotton thread round the unwanted hair, trapping it and lifting it out of the follicle. It is a particularly sanitary technique, as only the thread is exposed

to the skin, which is then disposed off afterwards. No chemicals, waxes or sugars are applied.

Due to its conciseness, threading is used to remove eyebrows, working in an amazingly even style. A well-experienced technician can have both eyebrows done in a minute and a half.

However, threading, if done incorrectly can, instead of removing hairs from the follicles, cause breakage of hair, making re-growth faster and with much stronger hair. The technician therefore needs to be well versed with the method.

Depilatory Creams

The word depilatory technically means 'hair remover'. The chemicals used are alkaline in nature. The cream is applied on unwanted hair then wiped off after 5 to 10 minutes below the skin level. It is an easy and comparatively cheaper method to use. Depilatory creams are sold at most drugstores and treatment can be effected at home.

Alkaline chemicals that make the depilatory creams are strong and can hurt the skin if left for too long. Care must therefore be taken to avoid blistering, burns, peeling of the skin and such other negative consequences of using cosmetic creams.

Unlike other hair removal techniques, depilatory cream’s results are quite short lived and hair will start growing in a couple of days. There are also people who are allergic to the chemical products that make the creams and so it is not good for everyone.

Waxing

This is a relatively less common approach (This is one of the most common ways I do this when things get really bad, but I don't do it for my eyebrows anymore. You can read about me and waxing and what I've done re: waxing for the face on this page.) to facial hair removal and is mostly used to remove leg hair. However, it is a very effective method because it completely removes the hair follicle right from its root.

A warm wax like product with a resin base is spread evenly over the unwanted hair with a cloth or paper strip rolled in the direction of hair growth. The strip will usually have cold wax applied on it before to help it adhere to the surface. Once the warm wax has cooled off, the strip is pulled out against the hair growth's direction, removing the hair follicles deep from the roots.

It is a fast technique and can be done either at home or with a hair specialist. Results will last up to five or six weeks.

There are several other methods of female facial hair removal, you can read about them on that page. Factors to consider include safety of the technique selected, time before hair grows back and other personal decisions such as comfort while applying the method.
